Commuter parking: a consultation will run until the end of May to help ease pressures in certain roads

A NEW controlled parking zone (CPZ) could soon come into force in Crouch End and Highgate.

Consultation will begin on Monday on the proposals, after residents raised concerns about parking pressures in the area.

Nearby CPZs and amenities mean commuters are parking all day in the cluster of roads between Shepherd's Hill, Hornsey Lane and Crouch End Hill, making it difficult for residents to park.

The council believes the new CPZ could ease the problem.

Councillor Brian Haley, cabinet member for environment and conservation, said: "This is all about giving residents what they want. If it's obvious most people don't want a CPZ, we won't introduce one. If some roads are clearly in favour but others aren't, we may draw up plans for a smaller scheme.

"The number of cars in Haringey - and across London - is continuing to increase.

"We're trying to halt that trend by promoting alternative forms of transport, but we have to deal with the reality we're faced with."

Councillor Martin Newton, Liberal Democrat traffic and transport spokesman also backed the proposals.

He said: "Hopefully this will be light at the end of the tunnel for the many residents who have been dogged by parking nightmares in Crouch End over the past year."

He added that he hoped the consulation would be "fair and open".

Residents and traders will be sent leaflets setting out the proposals and invited to give their views in a public consultation, which runs from Monday until June 16.

The council will also be holding two drop-in sessions to give residents the opportunity to question council officers about the proposals. These will take place on May 31 at Hornsey Library, Haringey Park, Hornsey from 10am to 1pm and on June 4 at Coolhurst Tennis Club, Coolhurst Road, Hornsey from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.

A report on the findings will be produced in September.
