Crime has dropped by 1,100 cases

There were more than 1,100 fewer crimes in Haringey last year compared with the previous twelve months, according to the latest police figures.

Between April 2007 and March 2008, overall crime in the borough reduced by almost four per cent with the total number of crimes now at nearly 29,500.

Robbery, gun crime and domestic crime have reduced significantly, and the number of rapes has dropped slightly.

Officers believe the borough's Q-Cars initiative, in which officers patrol in unmarked vehicles ready to respond quickly to reports of muggings, played a major role in reducing robbery in Haringey.

Haringey Police acting borough commander Detective Superintendent Richard Wood said: "We continue to see a good reduction in robbery, which is a remarkable achievement and a testimony to the hard work of the officers."

However, burglary increased last year by 4.5 per cent and motor vehicle crime, racist crime and homophobic crime all increased slightly.

Det Supt Wood added: "After six years of continued reductions in burglary it was always going to be challenging. I feel really good about the figures overall but we want to reduce them as much as we can."
