Baby and toddler classes in Crouch End: what runs and what it costs

For under-fives in Crouch End and Hornsey there is a decent weekly circuit within walking distance of the Clock Tower: music in the Picturehouse community room on Tottenham Lane, dance and sensory sessions at the children's bookshop on Middle Lane, and a pub function room on Park Road that turns into a music class on Wednesday mornings. What is harder to find is a price. Only one of the operators below publishes what a class costs before you get in touch.

Zip Zap Kids — The Maynard Arms, 70 Park Road, N8 8SX

Wednesdays. Little Zippers, for walking children from 12 months to five years, 9.45–10.30am. Baby Zappers, up to 18 months, 10.45–11.30am. From £11 a class. Book at zipzapkids.com.

Minimozart — Crouch End Picturehouse, 165 Tottenham Lane, N8 9BY

Wednesdays in the Community Room: babies at 10am, toddlers at 10.50am. No price is published on the booking page; ask before you book.

Suits a first outing with a small baby — one room, one morning, two age bands back to back, and a cafe on the way out.

Pickled Pepper Books — 10 Middle Lane, N8 8PL

The fullest weekly programme in Crouch End, at the children's bookshop off the Broadway.

• Monday: Montessori Discoverers, 10am and 11.15am; Storytime and Craft, 3.30pm.
• Tuesday: Little Boo Stories, 10am and 11am; Baby Loves Massage, run by Hartbeeps, 2.15pm.
• Wednesday: Waggle Dance Co. Honeybees, 18 months to two and a half, 1.15pm; Bumblebees, two and a half to four, 2pm.
• Friday: Storytime and Craft, 10.30am and 3.30pm.

Prices are not published on the activities page. The best bet on a wet weekday, and the only place locally offering something most mornings.

Hartbeeps — Hornsey Parish Church, Cranley Gardens, N10 3AH (unconfirmed)

A listing names the church on Cranley Gardens as a Hartbeeps venue, but no current day, time or price could be confirmed. The surest way to catch Hartbeeps in Crouch End is the Tuesday afternoon Baby Loves Massage session at Pickled Pepper Books. Ring before turning up anywhere else.

Sing and Sign — Hornsey Moravian Church (unconfirmed)

A booking site lists a Stage One class on Thursdays, 2–3pm. It has not been confirmed on the provider's own site. Check before travelling.

Baby Sensory — no confirmed Crouch End venue

The Wood Green franchise says it covers Hornsey and Crouch End alongside Islington and Tottenham, but its timetable produced no Crouch End address, day or price when we checked. Contact the franchise directly to find out whether anything runs this side of the hill.

How to choose

If you want certainty, Zip Zap Kids and Pickled Pepper Books are the two with named venues and published timetables of their own. If you want variety within ten minutes' walk, Wednesday is the day: Minimozart at 10am, Zip Zap either side of it on Park Road, Waggle Dance in the afternoon on Middle Lane.

The gap in this guide is not the classes, it is the prices. Three of the six operators marketing to N8 will not say what a session costs until you email them, and one of them will not say where it happens. A published price and a published address would save every parent in Crouch End a phone call — and it is fair to ask why the operators who manage it are the exception rather than the rule.
