For a first-timer with a small baby, Wildfish is the straightforward pick: a warm pool, a small group, a price you know before you turn up, and weekend slots that suit a household with two working parents.
Take a baby swimming in Crouch End and the first thing you learn is not how cold the water is. It is how hard it can be to find out what a lesson costs.
Three pools within reach of N8 run organised baby and toddler lessons: the council's own centre on Park Road in Hornsey, Virgin Active on Topsfield Parade, and Wildfish Swim School at Highgate School's Mallinson pool, just over the western edge of the patch by Highgate Wood. Two of the three publish no price at all for lessons. The third prints a full list, and it is the one just outside the boundary.
Here is what could be verified from each pool's own pages.
Park Road Pools and Fitness
Park Road, Hornsey
The council-run centre offers a swim school it describes as suitable for babies, toddlers and young adults of all abilities. No per-lesson or monthly price is published, and nor is a minimum age in months: parents are asked to fill in an enquiry form, and the centre says it will call back within 24 hours with prices and availability.
What is published is membership. A family membership covering two adults and two children is £126 a month, and a family flex membership covering one adult and three children is £104 a month. Both are stated to include children's swimming lessons, which is the only firm number a parent can plan around before making contact.
One thing to watch when comparing older listings online: Park Road came back under direct Haringey Council management on 1 October 2024, ending Fusion Lifestyle's run of the building. Prices from before that date should not be trusted.

Virgin Active Crouch End
31 Topsfield Parade, Tottenham Lane
The most central option, and the one that takes the youngest babies: the children's swimming programme is open from three months. Lessons are sold in packs of four or twelve. No price is published online, and there is no online booking; parents are told to ask in club. Nor is there a published rate for anyone who is not a member, so in practice this is an option for families already paying a membership or willing to take one on.

Wildfish Swim School, The Mallinson, Highgate School
Bishopswood Road, Highgate
The only one of the three with a published price list. Parent and baby lessons, capped at six pairs in a group, are £23 a lesson. Small-group children's lessons up to Stage 5 are the same £23; one-to-two lessons are £40 and one-to-one crash-course lessons £55. Payment is monthly by card, based on the lessons scheduled that month.
Term-time lessons run on Saturdays from 8.30am to 1.30pm and Sundays from 8.30am to 12.30pm. In the school holidays there are weekday crash courses, Monday to Friday from 9am to noon. The pool is kept at 29 degrees, which matters more than anything else on this page if the swimmer is a few months old and cries when cold.

How to choose
For a first-timer with a small baby, Wildfish is the straightforward pick: a warm pool, a small group, a price you know before you turn up, and weekend slots that suit a household with two working parents. It is a twenty-minute push from the Clock Tower rather than a five-minute one, and £23 a lesson is not nothing.
For families already in a Park Road or Virgin Active membership, the lessons are bundled and will almost certainly work out cheaper per session, once you have made the phone call or asked at the desk to find out what you are actually getting.
The gap in this guide is the council's own pool. Park Road is the local authority's leisure centre, run directly by Haringey since 2024, and a parent cannot learn from its own pages the youngest age it will take or what a term of lessons costs. We have put both questions to the centre, and asked Virgin Active what a non-member pays. A pool that belongs to the borough should be the easiest one in the area to price, not the hardest.
